Throughout my career, I have noticed that when it comes to new marketing: either you get it or you don’t. Although I couldn’t always fully execute my online initiatives, I can say with much certainty that I’ve had my influence along the way.
April 2008 - sometime before lunch: “Josyan, you really gotta get a better hobby!” pleaded Mr. Y (Person shall remain nameless here), following an animated discussion about the merits of Facebook.
That, in essence, sums up the type of comment I’ve had to tackle for the last 10 years or so. Who are these people? Those who didn’t get it.
I take Mr. Ys’ comment (as with all the others) in stride and with a smile (always). Why? Because I see something they don’t. In my universe, the internet is an economy on to itself and social media is the means by which any business can take part. The internet creates equality between all its participants. No matter how large or small your business is, you can compete side-by-side with your particular industry’s top guns.
“ Mr. X (Person shall remain nameless here also) doesn’t want to focus on his online store right now because it will never sell as much a physical store.” Yet another comment I received in 2006 from someone who obviously didn’t get it either.
Today, businesses can no longer afford to believe that the web isn’t worth the trouble. Even worse than that, that their client personas aren’t online anyway. Every company has a story to tell and, be sure, if you’re not even on the “web radar” no one will know you even exist.
Former employers all agree, I am passionate and I am intense. I consistently challenge myself and strive remain current. Things have changed in marketing and traditional tactics don’t necessarily work anymore. I believe that today’s marketing mix must be reexamined and must include the ‘right’ combination’s.
The gap between the web, the laptop, and the mobile phone is closing and I believe that this is where the next evolution of Web marketing tactics lie. Today consumers need immediacy and that’s not going to change. The solutions are far from being obvious, but I am up for the challenge.
Thanks for your eyes!
